Summer Matters To Kids Dot Com!

You’ve worked hard during the school year to develop new skills. If you don’t use those skills daily, you might lose them! Summer Matters to Kids will stop this loss of learned skills.

Summer Matters to Kids is a kit of materials designed for use over summer vacation. Each kit contains a Workbook, a Summer Journal, a Caregiver Guide, a calculator, and a fingerprint ID kit. There are five different versions of the kit suited for use between Kindergarten and Grade 1, Grade 1 and Grade 2, Grade 2 and Grade 3, Grade 3 and Grade 4, and Grade 4 and Grade 5. The materials in each kit reinforce the key Math and English/Language Arts skills developed during the school year.

The Summer Matters to Kids materials are designed to be used daily for 20 – 30 minutes a day, five times a week, for ten weeks. Ideally this would involve completion of one page of the Workbook supplemented by either a writing activity in the Summer Journal or an extension activity from the back of the Caregiver Guide. Another source of supplemental materials is the download section of this web site. 

The front pages of each Workbook list the key vocabulary developed in the grade the student just left. The back pages of each Workbook list the key vocabulary the student will face in the next grade. It is strongly recommended that both lists of words are reviewed regularly to ensure they are part of the child’s sight vocabulary. Additional activities based on these lists can be found in the back of the Caregiver Guide.

In addition, every backpack contains an access code that allows the owner to download worksheets from this site. The worksheets are puzzles that extend the academic content of the backpack materials. Ten new worksheets will be added to the download section every Saturday from June 7 through August 30.
